COMPATIBILITY OF NON-METALLIC MATERIALS WITH HYDROCARBON REFRIGERANT AND LUBRICANT MIXTURES

A number of non-metallic materials have been tested for their compatibility with hydrocarbon refrigerants and lubricant combinations. The non-metallic materials examined in this study include a variety of different elastomers and plastics commonly used as components in refrigeration applications such as 'o'-rings, valve seals and motor winding protection. Specific materials tested include silicone rubbers, Neoprene, Viton, Buna N, EPDM, HNBR, natural rubber and 'Mylar' in combination with pentane or a R290/R600a blend with either mineral or polyol ester oils. The tests were based on the requirements laid down in both European Standards for the testing of elastomeric materials and ASHRAE material compatibility test standards. Test results are presented for swell, hardness rating, weight change and tensile strength. Based on acceptable criteria the results have been used to identify suitable and preferable refrigerant/lubricant/material combinations and those, which should be avoided.
