Process Synthesis for Integrating Environmental Impact Minimization--A Process Systems Engineering Review

In decade of 1990s, significant progresses were made in process synthesis concerning environmental issues. This paper is trying to summarize the developments of this area in recent ten years in order to remind chemical engineers of what can be done now and what should be done in near future from an industrial viewpoint. After discussing some original concepts and hierarchies, two aspects of process synthesis, synthesis of reaction paths and process flowsheet, are highlighted for environmental impact minimization. Finally, several point are identified for future work from this survey.
