During the handling and storing of oil products in oil tanks, there may happen such accidents as pool fire, BLEVE, jet fire, and vapor cloud explosionetc. Oil products' specific properties of being flammable and explosive are the internal causes resulting in fire & explosion hazards. The leakage and dispersion of oil products and the occurrence of ignition sources are the origins of fire & explosion accidents. The main causes leading to leakage incldue equipment quality defects, process design faults and human unsafe activities etc., while the ignition sources come from breaking rules and regulations of welding and cutting, spot smoking, static electricity discharge, thunder stroke, and so on. The fire & explosion accidents of oil tanks have their own characteristics- the consequences are normally serious; burning and explosion often take place alternatively; escalation of fire is easy to be caused in an oil tank area, etc. Analyzing and understanding the causes and characteristics of the accidents are helpful for us to take relevant fire-preention, explosion-prevention and fire-fighting measures, so that the accidents can be avoided and accordingly the hazards can be diminished.
