Background/Objectives. Passive vapor samplers have been used for indoor and outdoor air monitoring as a quantitative tool for more than two decades. The application of passive vapor samplers and the reporting of quantitative results, have been welldocumented and accepted. Various consensus standards exist to describe how passive vapor samplers are to be calibrated according to considerations of Fick's First Law of Diffusion. These principles have been extensively applied to volatile organic compound (VOC) detection by passive samplers designed with a two dimensional diffusion surface for air sampling, but have not generally been applied to samplers having a three dimensional diffusion surface, or for passive compound concentration measurement in water.
