A full-scale in situ heat-activated chemical oxidation system was designed, installed, and operated to remediate an aqueous-phase pentachlorophenol (PCP) plume that was identified at a former wood preservative production facility in Washington State, USA. PCP and its carrier solvent were released to the shallow subsurface during the production process creating an aqueous-phase PCP plume approximately 15,000 square feet. In an effort to minimize the generation of hazardous waste with a RCRA waste designation of F027, in situ heat-activated chemical oxidation was selected as a remedial action to meet the state regulatory cleanup levels for groundwater and allow for more traditional technologies to be used to treat nonhazardous substances in close proximity to the PCP plume.
