1. PM LSM is an example of new emerging technology; 2. There are many geometries and topologies of PM LSMs; 3. PM LSMs have much higher thrust density (tangential force per mass or volume) that their induction counterparts; 4. Good quality PMs improve significantly the thrust density, efficiency and power factor. On the other hand, careful attention should be given to the increased cost, normal attractive force and cogging force at high magnetic flux density in the air gap; 5. In the last few years PM LSMs have found numerous applications in industrial electromechanical drives, particularly in factory automation and transportation systems; 6. Enormous role in the development of PM LSMs has been played by Japanese research institutions and both Japanese and United States industry.
