This text describes the implications upon system dimensioning and network planning when making the transition to third generation WCDMA based technology. The applicability of each process is demonstrated using illustrative examples of likely system operating scenarios. The challenges of accurately modelling WCDMA technology supporting mixed service types are described and the corresponding implications upon simulation complexity explained. An example network plan is used to illustrate system performance under various network loading conditions. Conclusions are drawn regarding the value of each tool and the anticipated evolution path as third generation systems mature.
