The following contribution describes the method for a life cycle analysis, developed and used at the Institute for Energy Economy and Application Technology at the Technische Universitat Munchen. It is based on a complete mass balance for the life phases production, use and final disposal or recycling of the devices. The specific energy consumption for the production, treatment, transport and assembly of the materials is applied to the mass balance. The result is a complete primary energy, emissions and costs balance. As an example the conversion of biomass energy carriers into hydrogen, methanol or other fuels for use in fuel cells and combustion engines is analysed and discussed.
