Changing Boiler Water Treatment Needs in High-Pressure Heat Recovery Steam Generators

As developers of new electric power projects strive to improve overall project economics, they frequently look to equipment suppliers and system designers for lower costs. Water quality concerns must be addressed early in a project as developers often consider using alternate sources of makeup water. Power block suppliers have designed more efficient gas and steam turbines, some of which have spe-cial water treatment needs. Increased steam pressure, reheat cycles and design changes have raised the standards for steam purity. This approach has changed traditional methods of boiler water treatment. Heat recovery steam generator manufacturers have specified water treatments and redesigned flow patterns, including cascading blow-down systems. Each of these changes may increase the efficiency of a particular boiler system component. However, as more of these efficiency enhancing designs are incorporated into boiler systems. they must be individ-ually evaluated to assure that they fit into the overall per-formance capability of the plant without increasing the total cost.
