Erosion coatings were developed for polymer matrix composites (PMC's) used in gas turbine engine applications up to 280 deg C. Sheet molding compound (SMC) consisting of chopped T650-35 graphite fiber and PMR-15 thermosetting polyimide resin was compression molded into flat coupons. These PMC's were coated with several coating systems and evaluated for their response to thermal cycling and Al_2O_3 grit erosion protection. The two layered coatings, comprised of a soft metallic bondcoat and a hard topcoat, were quite durable to both thermal cycling and grit erosion. A design of experiments complimented the erosion testing and aided in the selection of the most durable coating system.
