An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the compressive and flexural characteristics of IsoTruss-reinforced concrete relative to steel-reinforced concrete. The IsoTruss is a highly efficient, stiff, stable and lightweight, filament-wound, three-dimensional structural grid. Twenty-two specimens were tested in axial compression and twelve specimens were tested in flexure. The A-IsoTruss specimens were tested in compression and compared to three #3 steel-reinforced concrete specimens. The AB- and ABC-IsoTruss specimens were tested in compression and compared to five #3 steel-reinforced concrete specimens. The H-IsoTruss specimens were tested in compression to separate the contributions of the IsoTruss longitudinals and helicals. The A- and AB-IsoTrusses were also tested in flexure and compared to one and two #3 longitudinal steel-reinforced specimens, respectively. Strength, effective stiffness, and toughness data are presented. In compression, the AB- and ABC-IsoTrusses added more energy to failure to the concrete than did steel, although all the IsoTrusses had a lower compressive strength due to poor adhesion to the concrete. In flexure, concrete beams reinforced with the IsoTruss exhibited considerably greater strength, toughness, and effective stiffness than those reinforced with an equivalent amount of steel.
