The drive to reduce weight and increase the performance capability of aircraft Systems continues to push the use of polymeric composites into areas requiring extremes of high temperature and long term oxidative stability. Early materials, such as condensation polyimides, have given way to addition curing polyimides, PMR-15, which have achieved commercial success in commercial and military applications. However, the toxicity of methylene dianiline (MDA), a component of PMR-15 threatens the continued availability of this unique material. This paper describes the properties of AVIMID RB, an addition curing, polyimide which contains no carcinogenic diamine. The neat resin properties of this new material are superior to PMR-15; the glass transition temperature and mechanical properties of composites made from AVIMID RB are equal to or better than PMR-15.
