Historically, forged steel work rolls have been associated with cold rolling mill applications. Hot steel mill applications have traditionally specified the use of cast work roll products. The metallurgical basis for this differentiation is related to the general roll manufacturing process: * The "final" properties of forged steel cold mill work rolls are established by aggressive heat treatment of the roll body to meet the high hardness and strength specifications. The "low" tempering temperature required to satisfy these specifications results in a high level of residual compressive stress at the roll surface in equilibrium with a tensile stress at the interior. * The "final" properties of cast work rolls are established at relatively "high" temperatures during solidification and subsequent heat treatment of the roll body. Thus, the "high" temperature, low hardness, properties of the cast roll material are compatible with the hot mill environment.
