HSS work rolls for the early stands of hot strip mill have been required to have a good surface deterioration resistance and not to raise the rolling load during hot rolling. The increase in rolling load causes various problems in mill operation and product quality, including mill chattering, lowering of rolling reduction and scale scratches on the steel strip surface. In the case of HSS roll, the roll surface is apt to become rough due to the differences of abrasion between the granular MC type carbides and the matrix during hot rolling. These microscopically protuberances increase in frictional force. This frictional force resultantly raise the rolling load. Although, eutectic carbide suppress the abrasion of matrix and the increase in rolling load. The roll surface are deteriorated because of cracks and fractures carbides. Minute chipping and surface roughening of HSS work roll have serious influence on the quality of products.
