Primary lithium manganese dioxide batteries are being developed by Ultra-life Batteries, for ballistic telemetry applications for the design and testing of smart weapons. This work is being carried out under the Hardened Subminiature Telemetry and Sensor Systems (HSTSS) program, technically administered by the Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD) of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). Ultra-life has successfully engineered primary lithium manganese dioxide batteries and demonstratedprototypes capable of surviving shock, spin and acceleration while providing the high constant rates of discharge essential to this application. Cells tested in a Thin Cell(tm). format demonstrated capability of over 20 C constant rate discharge whilesurviving 100000 g forces in 3 axes. Ultra-lifes commercial range of cylindrical Li/MnO{sub}2 cells are able to survive shock levels in excess of 20000g and spin rates of 300 Hz. Electrical performance as well as shock table, spin acceleration, air guntesting and actual flight test data arc presented in this paper. Data is also reported on the performance of a rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery developed under the HSTSS program.
