The seismic response of a reactor containment building is studied. It is assumed founded on the laterally heterogeneous ground. A newly developed 3-D transmitting boundary is applied to model the coupled soil-structure system. Impedance functions of a rigid square footing embedded in the laterally heterogeneous stratum over rigid bedrock are obtained by a hybrid approach. The results are compared with those for the footing on the homogeneous stratum. The transfer functions of structural response to the free field ground motion are calculated. The time histories of the response are presented.
