Strong-motion data have been recorded at Sendai nuclear power station (NPS), which is located about 1,000 km west-southwest of Tokyo, Japan. On both March 26 and May 13, 1997, two moderate-sized earthquakes successively struck the Kagosima-ken hokuseibu area. These earthquakes originated nearby Sendai site, so that some of the highest accelerations ever recorded at Sendai NPS were obtained in the mainshock-aftershock sequence of these earthquakes. In this paper, nuclear facilities design implications of these earthquake records are intended to present. Firstly, practical properties of ground and structural concrete are estimated. Secondly, recorded structural responses are compared with those calculated by design model, so as to verify the efficiency of analysis model for nuclear facilities seismic design.
