This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program aimed at improving the current understanding of the response of reinforced / prestressed concrete under axial tension. A total of twenty five linear members are tested in uniaxial tension, of which twenty are axially prestressed and five are reinforced concrete. The two parameters that are examined are the percentage of normal steel and the degree of prestress. Based on the experimental results the average tensile stress-strain curve of concrete in tension is obtained. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a constitutive equation for predicting the average stress-strain response of reinforced / prestressed concrete specimen in direct tension by taking into account the effect of amount of additional normal reinforcement. The constitutive laws developed are validated using new set of experimental results.
