For many years the standard filter felt in the USA has been manufactured from polyester fibers without a reinforcing scrim. Until comparatively recently, it was technically almost impossible to produce mechanically sound filter products from aramid fibers without using a reinforcing scrim. Recent advances in technology have meant that this barrier to a cost effective filter system has been eliminated, and it is now viable to manufacture aramid needle felt from fibers alone. The paper details some of this development work, the results obtained, and touches on some future possibilities.
