During 1996, SOLUTIA's Everett property near Boston, Massachusetts was remediated in accordance with the State of Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) requirements prior to a reuse of the site as a 700,000 square feet shopping center. 6,000 cubic yard of soil contaminated with bis(2-ethyl-hexyl) phalate (BEHP), a common plasticizer, were treated using soil washing followed by bioslurry treatment of the separated fine soil fraction. The soil washing system was operated by Alternative Remedial Technologies Inc. (ART), and the bioslurry plant was operated by TEKNO ASSOCIATES. Four bioslurry reactors, operated in a semi-continuous mode, provided optimal process conditions for BEHP degradation during a hydraulic residence time of about 6 days. The reactors were seeded with specialized organisms which had been isolated from the site and grown in fermenters for inoculation at start-up and as needed during the project.
