Comparing and balancing lac-scale investigations were performed to determine if an intermediate ozonation and the use of thermophilic microorganisms are able to induce an advanced biological treatment of mixed-contaminated fine-particle materials in slurry reactor systems. Through the specific effect of an intermediate ozonation PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly higher condensed PAH which are difficult to degrade biologically), significantly could be reduced respectively transformed into water soluble components and thereby made available for a further biological degradation. Contaminant degrading microorganisms were added to enhance the degradation of the dissolved organic contaminants. The use of the presented thermophilic microorganisms allowed a degradation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons at temperatures of 60-70 °C.
