Waste compound degradation in gases and heavy metal containing water

Two joint research projects of the European Community deal with the biotechnological control of environmental pollutants in soil, water and gases mainly for an application in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The main studied pollutants were among others styrene, benzene, toluene, ethylebenzene, and xylenes (BTEX); trichloroethene (TCE); polycylcic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and phenolic compounds. Some species of bacteria (Pseudomonas, Comamonas, Acinetobacter, Xanthomonas) and fungal strains (Verticillium marquandii) were isolated from contaminated areas in Bulgarias, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Portugal. On the examples heavy metal accumulation and enhancing naphthalene bioavailability the results were described in detail. Waste compound degradation also is effective using immobilized microbial strains. Modelling experiments also were running during these two joint research projects.
