Digital Library research has great potential for playing a major role in the development of a national digital library for Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Education (SEMETE) [1-2]. Yet, that potential is far from being realized. This panel will bring together leaders in research, operations, education, assess-ment and public policy in the area of SMET education. The panelists will summarize the results of prior NSF workshops [3-5], will articulate an evolving community vision, address key research issues, present preliminary needs analyses and user studies and highlight "lessons learned" from existing educational libraries in selected SMET disciplines. The focus will be on a comprehensive digital library for undergraduate SEMT education that is sustainable, funded in a manner that emphasizes service to the educational community, adaptable to new technologies and build on and leverage past and current work in courseware libraries, digital library research and successful commercial sites. An Information Portal [6] for a Digital Library for Science, Mathematics, Science and Technology Education was initiated as a result of the NSF workshops with the goal of gathering and sharing information for ACM DL'99. This Information Portal is open to the community and we encourage input and interaction prior, during and after the ACM DL'99 conference. A summary of the input to date will be provided during the panel on the following topics: ·Existing SEMETE Digital Libraries · Lessons Learned From Existing Digital Libraries · Metadata · Publications Related to SMETE Digital Libraries · Services and Tools for Digital Libraries · Strategic Visions for the SMETE Digital Library · User Studies and Requirements Analysis for Digital Libraries
