Various in-situ measurements, under actual loading conditions, are conducted to maintain the structural integrity of large systems. Many sensors, each requiring electric power and cabling, are needed to continuously monitor the change of strain and deformation of whole components. On the other hand recent advance of the fiber optic technology called Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR) makes it possible to measure the distributed strain over about 20km.
