ARE INJECTION MOLDED TEST SPECIMENS HOMOGENEOUS AND REPRESENTATIVE?

The variation of properties that result from the production of injection molded test specimens of fiber reinforced plastics for ASTM testing procedures has been investigated. Modeling of polymers systems under various molding conditions was conducted with C-Mold to determine the magnitude of anisotropy that could be developed in the plaque or tensile bar. Preliminary work indicates that properties of the test specimen can be drastically affected by changing parameters such as mold configuration, temperature and injection time. This indicates a void in the current standards for the production of test specimens. The experimental component of this research will be designed to confirm the modeling results.
