In situ spectroscopy has been used to study the plasticization of glassy polymers by high-pressure and supercritical CO_2. The methodology for in situ spectroscopic analysis of the interactions between CO_2 and polymers has been described. The changes in IR spectra of CO_2 incorporated into various polymers indicate a specific interaction between CO_2 and polymer functional groups. Increased polymer segmental mobility has also been observed, indicative of the plasticization phenomenon. Implications of these discovered molecular interactions are discussed.
