Rapid advances in biotechnology and chemical synthetic techniques have resulted in a major expansion of interst in the devleopment of peptides and proteins as pharmaceuticals. The oral route of drug administration continues to be the most popular route despite the enormous barriers to drug delivery that exist within the gastrointestinal tract. They are the enzymatic and penetration barriers. Therefore, a search for an oral delivery system for peptides and proteins presents a considerable challenge. Oral administration is the most convenient and easiest mode of delivery both to the patient and the physician.
