The controlled release Gel Extrusion Module (GEM) tablet formulation consists of a water swellable polymer (e.g Carbopol), a buffer salt to regulate pH, drug and inert excipients. The core tablet is coated with a rigid, water impermeable membrane and subsequently laser drilled with a number of holes in each tablet face. A gelatinous matrix containing the drug is extruded through the laser drilled holes and the drug dissolves from the matrix as it disperses in the surrounding fluid in the gastrointestinal tract.
