Controlled delivery of fumaric acid - a new possibility in the treatment of psoriasis

Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting up to 3percent of the population, is characterized by epiderma hyperplasia, scaling, and infiltration of lymphocytes and granulocytes into the skin. Many treatment modalities were designed to obtain remission of the symptoms, based on inhibition of the proliferation of epidermal cells and interference in the inflammatory process. However, remission of obtained, is usually temporal, and/or partial, and an array of adverse effects often prevents further continuation of the treatments. Among the potent antipsoriatic agents studied during the last 35 years were fumaric acid (FA) esters.
