Wireless communication in health care is considered a new and emerging area of telehealth and telemedicine systems that will have an important role in creating versatile and cost effective alternatives to heath care delivery. This paper presents the modelling concepts of a GSM-based mobile telemedical system. The modular design of a mobile telemedical communication system based on GSM cellular standards representing the most widely used commercial cellular telephonic system worldwide is described. The simulation studies using Photoplethysmography (PPG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals shows the successful multichannel mobile transmission of the medical data with low bit error rates 10/sup -5/ depending on the condition and profile of the channel and the mobile environment tested. The design procedure presented here provide a generalized framework for the design of next generation mobile telemedical systems using new cellular standards.
