Neste Oy has been working since 1970 to improve the economics of refinery operations by reducing energy usage. Since 80s the tool has been Process Integration with Pinch Technology. Today studies show, that Neste Oy's Porvoo refinery is in terms of energy use the most advanced refinery in Europe. Neste has developed the Porvoo refinery to meet the most restrictive environmental requirements. An energy saving target is part of the refinery development program towards environmentally better products manufactured with less emissions. In this paper a brief discussion of the Total Site Analysis of Neste Porvoo refinery is given. The refinery has more than 30 process units and several boilers for utility production. The analysis showed that it is possible to reduce primary steam production by 20% with a better integration of processes and utility systems.
