In various fields of applications, there is a need to characterize suspended particles in terms of the particle size distribution (PSD) and to monitor its dynamic changes. Ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy seems to be most likely to succeed in monitoring the change in PSD for colloidal systems at industrially relevant volume fractions, which are beyond the scope of more conventional techniques such as light scattering. Ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy is developing rapidly as an alternative to light scattering method for the determining particle size distribution. Many new studies related to ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy have appeared since 1991 when McClement's review of ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy was published.
