Biocement D, a newly developed calcium phosphate based cement was implanted in a rabbit defect model. Eight weeks after implantation histology revealed no signs of inflammation. The resorption of the cement through ostcoclasts and concomitant new bone formation through osteoblasts seems to mimic the natural remodeling of bone. Osteoclastic activity was determined by histochemical staining of the tartrate-resistant-acidic-phosphatase (TRAP), osteoblastic activity by alcaline-phosphatase (APh) staining and bone matrix formation by means of osteocalcin detection.
