A transparent HA sol was prepared and coated on Ti6A14V substrates by a spin-coating technique. The crystallization of the HA coated on the metallic substrates could be done at relatively low firing temperatures as low as 600 deg C.In order to increase the adheerence of the HA coating layer to the Ti-alloy substrates, an intermediate glass sol was coated onto the substrate. It have been found that the number of cracks in the coating layers of both HA and glass was considerably decreased with dimethyl formamide (DMF) addition, and the morphology of the HA surface containing glass layer was smooth with fine grain structure. The smoothness of the HA coated layer was affected with the roughness of the grit-blasted substrate. The HA coating layer on the substrate grit-blasted with below 20 mu m-alumina powder showed the smoother and more uniform than that with 50 mu m powder.
