The effects of electrochemical polarization upon the deterioration of high alumina refractories in molten calcia-alumina-silicates are evaluated. Cathodic polarization of refractories proved to accelerate the dissolution of the refractory material. Anodic polarization, to the contrary, slowed the corrosion of refractories. The mechanism of anodic protection is explained in terms of formation of a double electric layer with negative cation (Ca~(++)) adsorption and thus establishment of a Ca-deficient zone at the refractory/molten oxide interface. Additional effect arises from the removal of Ca~(2+) cations from the refractory matrix via electro-migration.
