Ionically and electronically conducting ceramic materials have many potential applications, such as for catalysis, electrodes, sensors, gas separation membranes and membrane reactors. Of particular interest are materials which conduct both oxide ions and electrons. membranes from these materials can be used to separate oxygen from air and with the proper catalysis, can be used to promote the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons. This latter process is of particular interest as membrane reactors can promote this reaction without the need for pure oxygen and also elimination a potentially hazardous mixed oxygen/hydrocarbon feedstock.
