It is clear that there are a number of general-purpose processors whose DSP performance approaches or even exceeds that of dedicated DSP processors. While the benefits of implementing DSP functionality on a general-purpose processor are obvious, the system designer would do well to carefully consider the potential drawbacks of the various architectural approaches before selecting a processor.
