The intelligent network is a solution for the provisioning of advanced telecommunication services, based on the separation of the service control functions, located in few centralized nodes, and the transport and switching functions, which are distributed in several network nodes. A greater flexibility in service management and control should be achieved by exploiting architectures based on distributed processing, like the TINA one. In this article the application of intelligent network concepts in a broadband environment (intelligent broadband network), as defined in the ACTS INSIGNIA (IN and B-ISDN signalling integration on ATM platforms) project is described. Then a proposal for the evolution of this architecture towards TINA is discussed.
