Intelligent networking will be required in broadband to isolate complex service control from high performance switching. Architectures for narrowband intelligent networking are not directly applicable to broadband. Issues affecting the design of broadband intelligent networks are enhanced terminal intelligence, mobility, service complexity, private and public networking, and changing regulatory environments. Several different service controller types are presented and compared. A user/network interfaced switch controller is suggested. Broadband services and signalling issues and probable server/network evolution scenarios are discussed.
