Under ligninolytic conditions, the white-rot basidiomycete Coriolus versicolor trannsformed the s ulfur containing aromatic compound, 4-methyldibenzothiophene which is the recalccitrant organic sulfur contaminant found in petroleum. The metablic pathway was consituted with several reaction steps, 2-step oxidative reaction of sulfur atom, benzylic hydroxylation and xylosylation. These reactions were not catalyzed by extracellular ligninolytic enzymes such as lignin and manganese peroxidase (LiP, MnP) or laccase (Lac).
