Various thermophilic fungi were isolated and screened for the presence of hemicellulases and cellulases. Strain MED 4B1 was identified as Thermomyces lanuginosus. The grwoth-associated production of xylanases, #beta# -xylosidases and carboxymethylcellulases (CMCases) from MED 2D and T. lanuginosus MED 4B1 was monitored. Analysis of the culture supernatant revealed high levels of xylanase activity, with low inducible levels of #beta# -xylosidase activity.
