In order to make an Al-Si-Mg alloy ingot having fine, homogeneous grain size in cast structures, a vertical continuous casting machine was used to cast a semisolid alloy. Crystal seeds of the primary a aluminum were nucleated on a specially designed cooling plate. This was followed by pouring the molten alloy into the mold. The seeds of primary crystals existing in the molten alloy grew granular grains. Factors which affected the ingot structures were the pouring temperature, the cooling plate temperature, and ingot casting speed. The most suitable casting conditions yielded fine grains of primary a aluminum and eutectic silicon crystals in the ingot. The solid fractions of the continuously cast ingots obtained were 0.6 to 0.7.
