The paper investigates some wavelet techniques in application to fish target strength estimation. As a starting point theoretical aspects of inverse problems are presented. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) being standard method of treating ill-posed problems is compared to the decomposition developed on the wavelet basis. The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is presented as a matrix operation in the context of the inverse problem. Histogram denoising using wavelet coefficient thresholding and target strength estimation by Wavelet-Vaguelette Decomposition (WVD) are presented as numerical examples.
