Insights and Lessons from PSA for Nuclear Power Plants: Experience of the Belgian Regulatory Body

This paper reports on insights gained and lessons learned from reviewing PSAs for nuclear power plants. Concerning the review process, our experience with performing on-line reviews is described. On the scope and methodology of PSA, the importance to cover non-power states is discussed and our experience with different approaches for the level 2 analyses are explained. Concerning the use of PSA for the operating plants, the Belgian experience of incorporating the PSAs in the periodic safety reviews (PSR) of the plants is described. Some potential PSA applications being explored within AVN are explained. Also the status of two international projects related to future reactors, in which the role of PSA is being discussed, is described.
