This paper presents a numerical analysis of the stress field in a fibre/matrix fragment by the finite element method (FEM). The stress distributions in the fibre, matrix and at the fibre/matrix interface are given for a single fibre fragmentation test. The fibre/matrix interface is considered as both fully bonded and partially debonded. In the debonded region, the stress transfer is governed by the Coulomb friction between the fibre and matrix. The effects of a matrix crack which appears around a fibre break have also been studied in this work. It is shown that the presence of a matrix crack reduces the efficiency of stress transfer from matrix to fibre and affects the interfacial debonding behaviour. FEM results are compared with those obtained previously by analytical mechanics.
