Medium-cement refractory castables suitable to the application to the oil refinery unit lining were investigated by using aluminate cement, brown fused alumina (e.g. brown corundum), and silica fume, etc., as raw materials. The effect of silica fume on the performances of medium-cement refractory castables was investigated. The results demonstrates that medium-cement refractory castables has many advantageous features, when compared with low-cement castables, such as more compacted structurally and higher strength after heating at 815°C, less susceptible to variations in application technology, e.g. mixing, placing, and primary heating, etc., and less susceptible to environmental conditions. When silica fume content was 2-8% the strength and permanent linear change of the castables increased with temperature in the temperature range of 110-1100°C. The optimal additional content of silica fume is 3-6%.
