This paper mainly deals with the topic of slope stability of the unsaturatd soils, especially the expansive soils. Firstly, the essential problems of studies for unsaturated soils, namely air phase patterns and regulartities of air/water movement are discussed. Then, the soil-water characteristic curve is utilized to estimate the relationship between water content and the shear strength contributed from matric suction, and a practical shear strength expression for unsaturated soils is presented. Thereafter, the primary factors affectingthe stability ofexpansive soil slope ar explored. On the basis of these, an approach for constituting the early forecast of landslide is porposed according to the train of thought of water content-soil suction-shear strenght-analysis of slope stability.
