Internet Telephony Standardization Interoperability: The Integration of Voice, Video and Data over the IP Protocol Suite

Internet Telephony has begun revolutionizing the way people and businesses communicate. This confluence of voice, video and data poses new challenges for vendors and operators as the pace of change in telecommunications becomes as rapid as the pace of change in the personal computing and software industries. In addition to traditional bodies such as the ITU-T, ETSI, and ANSI, less traditional bodies such as the IETF and the IMTC are driving the progress of IP Telephony. In this paper, recent developments towards the standardization and interoperability of IP telephony are documented (for interoperability amongst the emerging IP telephony applications themselves as well as for the interoperability of new IP based applications with existing network infrastructures) and the current state is reported. Areas of future work that will enable IP telephony's becoming totally mainstream are identified.
