Development of Computer Control System for the RH Degasser at POSCO Pohang Works

A computer control system has been developed for the computer control of RH degasser and the automatic operation. The metallurgical model in the computer control system has three main parts; composition control model, deoxidation control model, and temperature control model. The composition model estimates not only the chemical composition of the molten steel, but also the alloy amount to be added based on the chemical analysis in the previous station. And Sol. Al and carbon content in melt is predicted. Deoxidation model calculates the amount of Al and Fe-Si to be added using the measured value of free oxygen in melt. The temperature prediction module predicts the melt temperature in every one minute, and calculates the amount of coolant to be added to hit the casting temperature. The model was installed and applied successfully in No. 1 RH of No. 1 Steelmaking Shop at Pohang Works, POSCO. The operation ratio by the computer control has reached above 95percent through the model tuning.
