The history of wire line diameter measurement gauges starting about 1950 to the present is out-lined. The paper covers hand-held micrometers and on-line mechanical gauges used prior to 1950; first electronic gauges deviation type vacuum tube; motorized pot feedback control; laser gas tube; voltage feedback control; laser solid state; complete wire line system control diameter, wall thickness, concentricity; CCD technology; and X-ray gauges multi-wall.
